Broken Records

I've always been fascinated by weather and sometimes wonder if I maybe even missed my calling in life and should have been a meteorologist. I don't like hurricanes or the damage and destruction they cause, but they do capture my attention when they are in the news, especially when they are in the Gulf of Mexico. But the weather event that has my attention right now is the extreme heat that's happening in my state. The high temperatures have been breaking records during the past week, and yesterday two records were broken. Yesterday our temp was 104, breaking the record of 103, but it also broke the record of the most consecutive days of temps in the three-digit range. It has absolutely been unbearable to be outside on these days.

But yesterday I noticed that I have become desensitized to these extremely high temperatures -- not in the way it feels outside, but in the way I think about it. Anytime in the past when I heard that our temps were going up to 100, I thought it was unbelievable. I remember just last week when they said the high for the day was going to be 103, I was in shock, but when they forcast a high of 106 I absolutely did not believe it was even possible. So yesterday I looked down at the little "weatherbug" on the computer to see how hot it was outside right then and when I saw 101, I was like hmmm, big deal. A fact that had amazed me just a week ago, now didn't mean much to me. And to think that I'm looking forward to Saturday when things might cool down to 99, well, something is wrong here.

I think this desensitization toward the weather is a lot like what has happened in our culture. Years ago, things that were considered unacceptable and wrong are now accepted as normal and even as good in some cases. Over the years, little by little, we have seen things on TV, movies, and the news that have desensitized us to what is right and what is wrong. So, why have things changed from the way they were in the past? Did God change his mind about what he wrote in the Bible concerning right and wrong? The way I see it, God is still the same as he was at the beginning of time, and his Word has not changed. We are the ones who have changed. I believe the Bible and that is where I have to go learn the truth about what is right and what is not.

If you read this and you are not of the same faith or beliefs as me, that is okay. I am not trying to change anyone -- I can't change people. But I do believe the Word of God. I would like to challenge you to read it if you haven't and let me know what you think.

For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

Hey, thanks for commenting on my blog, but I'd like to point out one thing that you said is practically wrong. God didn't write the bible, his deciples did. Religion wasn't created by God, it was created by human beings like you and me. If people wanted to create another religion that people might have an intrest in following, they sure could.

Now, concerning the weather, it is basically from Global Warming that we all create which makes the earth to heat up and hurricanes to create. And basically from noticing that before you'd be worried that the weather is 99 degrees is practically okay the next year or so, is actually telling you something.

Okay, before in my other post about me being atheist is true but if I were to look in a beliver's perspective I'd have to say God is saying something to us. He's probably creating extreme weather and such from what we do to the earth he created. Pollution, oil spills, transportation, cutting down trees for freeways...it must make him at least a bit mad we are ruining the wonderful land he created for us in the first place.

Now that is my opinion, and if you didn't like it, oh ah well.

Avi, I hope you will take the challenge that I've put out at the end of the post.

Kathy - great analogy. We do become complacent. We had a Sunday School teacher give us a quote but I don't know who said it. It says "What one generation condones, the next generation embraces!". By our silence we condone what has changed in our culture and now the next generation accepts it as a part of life!

I agree with you about our being desensitized. It's so easy for humans to be desensitized, I think...and it can be about anything at all.

Never thought that 99 degrees would be something to look forward to. I've been running outside for exercise like an idiot. I'll do it again today, but would love some cooler weather.

Kathy, I read the excerpt and I'm not denying what it said. Of course the word of "God" is strong and everyone can have an opinion about it... people have tried to change me tons of times, but I won't budge... the only thing I can belive in the bible is that the way of how it speaks of good and bad... the stuff however that is bad and tells you not to follow I don't belive in...

Before I go on might saying something hurtful I'll stop right here...just because of the fact I don't want to bicker with you and other people that might back you up.

Still enjoying your blogs. I am not what you would call a devoted christian, I don't go to church any more, in search of a new one, but I have spent a good part of my life reading the Bible and in prayer. I do agree with a lot of what you have to say but I also know that there are many different versions of the Bible that man has translated and I think down through the years a word here or there may have been misplaced. All in all if God wanted the rules to be changed he would have changed them. Hello He's All powerfull! I think the old way is always the best way. Great blog Kat!

I love the weather here in California. Not too hot but not too cold either.
